Vegan candies and treats to give out this Halloween

Contents

Remember trick or treating when you were a kid, and there was always that house that gave out apples instead of candy? The disappointment! Halloween is the one day each year where kids can indulge in sugary and salty treats and get away with it. So why rob them of the fun? Unfortunately, many of the treats that people hand out are not vegan-friendly. But you don’t need to be “the apple people” to ensure the goodies you hand out are vegan.

There are tons of tasty vegan candies and treats that you can hand out this Halloween.

Common non-vegan ingredients found in candy and snacks

We all know how to look out for obvious non-vegan ingredients like dairy and eggs, but there are some other ingredients that aren’t quite as obvious. Here are the biggest offenders when it comes to animal-derived ingredients in candy and snacks:

1. Gelatin

As the name suggests, gelatin is a gelling agent that gives many processed foods their gelatinous texture. It has no flavor or color and comes from animal collagen obtained by boiling the skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones in water. Jelly candy, marshmallows, and fruit snacks often having gelatin, so it’s definitely worth checking the ingredient list of any “gummy” type of candy or snack.

2. Beeswax

Beeswax is also a common ingredient in gummy candies like jellybeans, gummy bears, and jelly worms. Bees produce beeswax and use it to build their hives. Since it’s an animal-derived product, it is not vegan. Beeswax is used to give certain candies their texture, as well as preventing them from sticking together.

3. Confectioner’s Glaze

Confectioner’s Glaze, also called Shellac, is another common non-vegan ingredient used in candies and treats. You may also see it listed as resinous glaze, as it is made from a resin secreted by the lac insect. The resin is then collected, and through a heating and cooling process, it’s transformed into sheets and used to glaze candy.

So, now that you know what ingredients to look out for when you’re choosing food products to hand out this Halloween let’s look at some great options that are 100% vegan.
